Photography in the Okanagan: Everything expecting parents need to know about getting photos

Are you an expecting parent looking for photography in the Okanagan and wondering how to capture those precious moments of your pregnancy and your baby’s first year? As a professional photographer based in Peachland, I have worked with many families and have heard some common questions. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions I receive and my answers to help you prepare for your photo sessions.

Photography in the Okanagan – What you need to know!

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO HAVE YOUR MATERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE OKANAGAN?

I suggest scheduling your maternity session between 28-34 weeks of pregnancy. This timeframe allows you to show off your beautiful baby bump without feeling too uncomfortable. It also ensures that you will have the photos taken before the baby arrives, as they can often arrive early. Be sure to book your photographer early in your second trimester to secure your preferred date. Your session can take place at a stunning outdoor location or in my studio and you will have full access to my client closet.

WHO SHOULD I INCLUDE IN MY MATERNITY SESSION?

Your partner and any other children you have are welcome to join in your maternity session. It is a special time for your whole family, and capturing everyone together will be a cherished memory.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GET NEWBORN PHOTOS IN THE OKANAGAN?

For posed newborn sessions, I recommend scheduling them within the first 14 days of your baby’s life. This timeframe is ideal for capturing the sleepy, curled-up poses that many parents love. You will come to my Peachland photo studio where I encourage you to sit back, relax, and watch me work while you take a break from the newborn chaos.

SHOULD I HAVE A LIFESTYLE OR POSED NEWBORN SESSION?

Both options have their advantages, and it ultimately comes down to personal preference. As a photographer, I specialize in posed newborn sessions, but we can do the family portion of your session in our master suite. A posed session can capture your baby’s features and expressions, while a lifestyle session captures the everyday moments with your baby. Which ever photography in the Okanagan you choose, you will be so grateful for these memories to look back on.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY PHOTOGRAPHY SESSIONS?

Choosing the right outfit for your photo session can be stressful. As your photographer, I am happy to offer guidance on what to wear to ensure a cohesive look for your family. As a client you will gain access to the studio closet full of gowns for mom and the kids as well as my full style guide. I recommend coordinating colours and textures, avoiding loud patterns, and opting for comfortable and timeless pieces. For newborn sessions, I recommend neutral tones, such as creams and whites, for a classic and timeless look.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BOOK A PHOTOGRAPHER FOR MY BABY’S MILESTONE SESSIONS?

Most parents book a photographer for their maternity and newborn sessions and then choose to schedule milestone sessions at 6 months and 12 months. However, it is entirely up to you and your preferences. Parents to opt to enrol in my baby plan membership will get their maternity, newborn, 6 months and cake smash sessions photographed.

WHERE DO YOU RECOMMEND HAVING MY MATERNITY, NEWBORN, AND MILESTONE PHOTOGRAPHY SESSIONS?

I offer photography sessions in Okanagan, either in my Peachland studio or on location throughout the area. For maternity sessions, we can shoot outdoors during the warmer months or in the comfort of my studio. For newborn sessions, I recommend coming to my studio, where I have all the props and equipment necessary for a successful session. Milestone sessions can be done in the studio or a location that is meaningful to your family during the warmer seasons.
