Spencer Family Adventures | Oregon + California Part 2

Updated: Apr 28, 2020

After an eventful first night (see previous post here) and wondering a few times why the hell we were doing this road trip with a 4 1/2 year old and an 18 month old haha, we made it to our very first destination! Seaside, Oregon.

Our must see’s in Seaside were:

• All the pretty beaches but most definitely, Cannon Beach & Haystack Rock

Thousand Trails had lots of options for us in Oregon so it made it easy to use our camping pass here.

September 20th

We pulled in, picked our spot and the kids immediately made themselves right at home. They played in an old tree while Brian and I got our campsite all set up. (We tend to put in too much effort getting our campsite all set up just right, so the quick set-ups and take-downs were a bit of a learning curve for us). We headed out to do a big grocery shop (no tax woo woo) and do a quick tour of Seaside without the trailer. I found the yummiest Strongbow Rose Apple ciders! These were definitely the booze highlight of the trip lol. If you were following along on my insta stories you may have seen them pop up a few times, I even got Brian hooked on them!

After dinner, we decided to head to Funland, Seasides very own arcade. We played games and adventured around for a few hours before heading across the street (in the pouring rain) for ice cream. I’m pretty sure the kids fell asleep on the way home, which made for a relaxing night for mom and dad. Campfire, Ciders, peace and quiet? Yes please! This was much better than the last night. (Ok now it is making sense why we are doing this lol)

September 21st

The plan was to lounge around and have a big breakfast in the morning before venturing over to Cannon Beach & Haystack Rock. I couldn’t get over how breathtaking the views were, oh and the squeaky sand lol! I tried to take a video but it just didn’t do the sound justice. If you have been to Cannon Beach, please tell me I am not the only one who was obsessing over this lol. It was cool and foggy when we first arrived but it quickly warmed up after the sun peeked out. The kids played for hours in the sand, they ran up and down the beach, rolling around, having the time of their lives. Brian and I could actually relax and let the monsters run loose because the beach just went on for miles. Brooklyn’s first real beach experience and she was hooked, literally hugging the sand with the biggest smile on her face (and minimal sand in her mouth lol). We packed a picnic lunch and got attacked by birds while we ate it haha. Both kids tried to bury dad in sand (they did one leg and gave up lol so we buried Nixon instead) Both kids were having the time of their lives and we were only on day one!! It was the cutest thing ever to watch! Only one beach down and I honestly would have been satisfied if this was our only destination.

Shout out to my hubby Brian for “attempting” to take some photos of me and the kids playing on the beach. At least he got ONE in focus 😉 A for effort babe!

I brought my tripod with the best intentions of using it at every spot we went and well this was the only time we actually used it, haha. At least we got one great family picture on our adventure lol.

Brooklyn fell asleep on the drive back to the campsite so we decided to take a tour of seaside. We found a beautiful spot along the board walk so we got out to stretch our legs and of course snap some pictures.

After a long day of adventuring we headed back to our campsite for some bike riding, park play and some of Brian’s famous caesars (yes we packed our own Clamato lol) then after then dinner we hit the pool so we could tire out the kids in hope of a painless bedtime. I would say it worked, Nixon fell asleep in a camping chair while watching a movie and Brian and I had a campfire and sipped on of course, our new favourite Rose apple ciders lol.

Travel Tip: we based our campsites in Oregon off whether or not they had an indoor pool. LOL. It was fall I wasn’t going into a pool unless it was heated haha.

We had so much to cram into this 18-day road trip! When we decided to add California into our itinerary we decided that we would cut our days a bit short in Oregon, being only 6ish hours away we knew we will be back!!

Up next is our time in Newport!! See that post HERE.
